Welcome to Wester Markinch
About the house and Balbirnie Estate
The house known as Wester Markinch was once a collection of dwellings belonging to the Balfours who were the ruling family of the area. The workers of the estate lived here and this house was in fact the joiners cottage. Built in 1891 and sympathetically extended and restored by the Tjeransen family from 1991 to date.
Balbirnie Estate is a beautiful 416 acre country park. It boasts one of the best rhododendron collections in the area. With lovely walks and a golf course, many hours can be spent exploring. At the north end of the park, there is a stone circle, which although is not in its original position, is certainly worth a visit. The park is dominated by Balbirnie House Hotel which has won awards for weddings. The 18th century house was inhabited as recently as 1970’s by the Balfour family. After a brief period of being used as offices by Glenrothes Corporation it was sold privately and Balbirnie House Hotel came into being.
